An analysis of the construction of meaning in chemistry classes
Keywords:
semantic profile, discourse analysis, classroom discourseAbstract
The study of science teaching and learning requires an analysis of how knowledge is organized and legitimized in the classroom. This study employs the Theory of Legitimation Codes, focusing on its semantic dimension, which considers semantic density and gravity to identify discursive profiles. Three high school chemistry classes on dispersions and colloids, chemical bonds, and organic functions were analyzed. Through the analysis, distinct semantic profiles and variations in the contextualization of knowledge were identified. Three high school chemistry lessons on dispersions and colloids, chemical bonds, and organic functions were analyzed and compared. Through this analysis, distinct semantic profiles and variations in the contextualization of knowledge were identified. The results show that teachers organized their discourses in diverse ways depending on the content, which directly influences the construction of scientific meanings. The study highlights the importance of teachers’ discursive choices in science education, emphasizing how these decisions impact the way students access and understand scientific knowledge.
